Work in(g) Studio Opens at PNCA

Work in(g) Studio Opens at PNCA
and Runs Through April 30th

The work in this exhibition is an ongoing experiment and process of exploration which started with the August 2010 exhibition by the same name at Paia Tattoo Parlor on Maui, Hawaii.

Inspired by traditional tattoo parlors where tattoo artists work and mingle with the public in an atmosphere of creative frenetic energy in private and semi-private cubicles, the exhibition will function as a living performance and installation where my private studio is relocated to the PNCA Corner Gallery, off of the Swigert Commons.

The result will be—from setup to finish--a three-week installation/performance/exhibition of new and ongoing works in progress. All the ephemera associated with the working studio will be set up for the exhibition, creating a constantly changing art experience where the viewing public and PNCA students will have a chance to see the progression of my art-making process.

Daily Exhibition Updates will be posted on www.WorkingStudio.Blogspot.com

Closing Reception: In lieu of the traditional opening reception, the exhibition reception for Work In(g) Studio will be on the second to the last day of the show, Friday, April 29th, from six p.m. when portions of the newly created body of work will be on display.

Fist Study of (A)TOPIA for Submit Magazine

Two photogravure copper plates are being made of 15 images each which will both be printed 17 times for a total of 510 prints for this semester's Submit Magazine at PNCA. (The numbers are significant--15 is the number of stones at Ryoanji; 17 syllables in a haiku.)

The theme for the issue is Utopia. Taking this idea, I have used as a title Helmut Willke's word to describe a society without boundaries. Thinking of the total loss of global boundaries in an accelerated life that the internet brings, I am focused on how the Japanese catastrophe has impacted all of humanity, and is already yesterday's news in the normal cycle of things.

I am using found images from Japanese family photo albums to create a series of images to be printed over and over again, with the plates being distressed and destroyed as the process goes along. The result will be 510 unique images--all different in the way they have degenerated into nothingness--like the Japanese word zanzo, which describes a parting glance of something lost.

Each 4x5 inch image will be tipped into the magazine in a clear envelope with colophon. This is a video of the first phase in the process.
